Akron Police Officers Involved in Fatal Shooting Will Not Face Charges

Unrest Continues in Akron Following the Shooting Death of Jayland Walker

AKRON, Ohio - A 25-year-old Black man who was killed last week by police officers in Akron, Ohio, suffered more than 60 gunshot wounds, according to a report by the Summit County Medical Examiner's Office.

Jayland Walker was shot and killed by police officers on June 27, 2022, after a traffic stop. The officers involved in the shooting were responding to a report of a car that had fired shots into an occupied house.

According to the medical examiner's report, Walker was shot 60 times, including 46 times in the torso and 14 times in the head and neck.

A grand jury in Ohio decided not to charge the eight Akron police officers involved in the shooting. The grand jury found that the officers acted in self-defense.

The decision not to charge the officers has sparked protests and unrest in Akron. Protesters have called for the officers to be held accountable for Walker's death.

The city of Akron is on edge this Fourth of July, one week after the fatal police shooting of 25-year-old Jayland Walker.
